Custom Awards: NASA OPTIMUS PRIME Awards

Bennett Awards recently completed a project to develop a set of custom awards for NASA. These custom trophies were used as recognition awards for the NASA OPTIMUS PRIME Spinoff Video contest. This contest encourages students to produce and submit short, creative videos about their favorite technology from NASA’s Spinoff Publication. The goal of this program is to help students understand how NASA technology is transformed into things that are used in our everyday lives.

For the contest, students submitted videos that were grouped into two age categories: 3rd-5th grades, and 6th-8th grades. The videos were posted on YouTube, and members of the public voted for their favorite videos. A panel of NASA judges reviewed the top 5 videos in each age category and selected two winners.

Contest winners were presented with unique, custom trophies designed by Bennett Awards at a recognition awards ceremony held April 12, 2011, at the U.S Space Foundation in Colorado Springs, CO. The achievement awards presentation was held as part of the 2011 National Space Symposium.

The unique custom trophies designed by Bennett Awards were based on Bennett’s "Crystal Honor" recognition awards, which feature a clear crystal polyhedron embedded with a custom-designed, 3D opaque object. The customized object used by NASA was a 3D image of the transformer “OPRIMUS PRIME”. NASA collaborated with Hasbro on the program, and the transformer figure helps reinforce how NASA technologies are “transformed” into items used on a daily basis.
